Vintage Glam Meets Modern Luxury at National Hotel Miami Beach

Miami hotel view.

If walls could talk, the ones at the National Hotel Miami Beach would whisper tales of jazz-fueled nights, sun-kissed days, and golden-era decadence with a modern twist. Nestled in the heart of South Beach’s Art Deco District, this iconic, adults-only oceanfront retreat isn’t just a hotel it’s an experience. A curated capsule of classic elegance blended with contemporary flair, it invites guests into a world where history lives on, martinis are shaken just right and the infinity pool feels like it stretches into another era.Whether you’re sipping a craft cocktail at the sultry Bar 1939, wandering past bold murals and sculpture installations, or soaking up sea views from a redesigned suite, the National invites you to escape the ordinary. It’s also where we caught up with Stephane Mercier, the property’s Managing Director and a storyteller in his own right ready to spill the secrets behind the National’s singular charm.

Artfully Ever After

MK: The National Hotel has such a strong artistic identity. What drives that integration of art throughout the property?SM: The soul of the National is rooted in its Art Deco heritage and art is our language. We want guests to be immersed not just in luxury but in the aesthetic revival of Miami Beach’s golden age. Designed by Roy France, the architectural legend behind much of the Miami skyline, the hotel still holds to his ethos: design that evokes emotion. So, we’ve preserved signature features like terrazzo floors, chrome sconces and vintage check-in desks. But we’ve also layered in curated artwork, murals and modern touches to create a living gallery. The result? Every corner tells a story and every guest becomes part of it.

The Modern Luxury of Legacy

MK: What gives the National Hotel such strong appeal to today’s luxury traveler?SM: It’s all about authenticity. We’re one of the few properties in South Beach that remains true to its Art Deco roots without compromising on modern comfort. Plus, we’re the only beachfront, adults-only hotel in the area, which really sets us apart. Our guests come for the design, the culture, the sophistication and stay for the unexpected a piano tucked in a vintage lounge, suede chairs under copper cobra lamps or a live jazz trio turning a Saturday evening into a scene from a movie.

Where Every Detail Tells a Story

MK: How do the art pieces elevate the hotel’s storytelling?SM: They’re more than decor they’re characters in our narrative. From the hand-painted murals in our Artist Collection Suites to the Renoma Suite and the sculpture by Carole Feuerman at the entrance, each piece builds on the National’s legacy. Guests don’t just stay here they feel the legacy through every brushstroke and sculpture.

A Modern Design That Speaks Volumes

MK: How does the architectural design influence the guest experience?SM: Roy France had this belief that hotels should blend into their surroundings while still making a statement and that’s exactly what we do. The Art Deco flair lives in our bones, from the corner windows to our mosaic “Girl with the White Glove.” But we balance that heritage with current design partnerships and art showcases, rotating year-round. We even work with Art Deco history tours to keep the story alive for the community and our guests.

Hidden Treasures and Timeless Tales

MK: Any little-known stories from the National’s past?SM: Oh, where to start? We’ve welcomed celebrities since the ’50s, survived the ebbs and flows of South Beach’s transformation and held onto our soul while the city evolved. Mariah Carey performed here during the 2005 MTV VMAs, and Whitney Houston filmed part of her “Heartbreak Hotel” music video onsite. Those aren’t just moments they’re part of our DNA now.

Suites with a View and a Vibe

MK: Tell us about the suites what makes them stand out?SM: Every room offers a mix of old-world charm and modern indulgence. Our Artist Collection Suites, designed by Elizabeth Fatone are packed with personality bold murals, vintage touches, Art Deco shapes. Our Penthouse Suite spans three levels and features expansive ocean views. Even the robes and radios in our cabana rooms are thoughtfully curated to add to the guest experience.

A Culinary Time Machine

MK: Mareva1939 has become a star in its own right. What inspired it?SM: We wanted something that honored the year we opened 1939 while offering something fresh. Mareva1939 is a Spanish tapas-style restaurant that combines traditional Iberian flavors with Miami’s tropical vibrancy. The vibe is family-style dining with refined elegance and we pair it with natural wines and seasonal cocktails. The Martini Bar, just next door, feels like stepping into a mid-century film set. It’s moody, intimate and glamorous in all the right ways.

Vintage Vibes, Modern Edge

MK: The bar spaces feel like secret gems. What makes them such a draw?SM: They’re experiential. These aren’t just bars they’re escapes. With their nostalgic decor, expertly crafted cocktails and live music, they channel a speakeasy vibe that appeals to both travelers and locals. Guests don’t come for just a drink they come for the moment.

Modern Signature Amenities, Miami Style

MK: What else makes the National a true standout in South Beach?SM: Besides being adults-only and pet-friendly which is surprisingly rare we’ve got the longest infinity pool in Miami Beach, clocking in at 205 feet. It’s a showstopper. Surrounded by palm trees and flanked by cabanas, it’s an oasis that stretches into the horizon. Add in the Aqua Bar & Grill, beachside QR-code ordering and a new state-of-the-art fitness center and we’re delivering a luxury experience that feels effortless.

Legacy Meets Next-Level

MK: How do you balance honoring history with modern needs?SM: By embracing technology where it enhances the experience like Smart TVs, contactless payments or app-based ordering without losing that sense of timeless charm. Our mission is to evolve without ever losing sight of who we are.

Looking Ahead

MK: What can guests look forward to in the future?SM: We’ll continue to host major Miami happenings like Art Basel, Miami Swim Week, and the South Beach Wine & Food Festival, but also introduce more immersive events live performances, pop-up art exhibits, culinary residencies. We’re not just a place to stay we’re a place to be.As Stephane Mercier puts it, the National Hotel isn’t just a destination it’s a mood. A celebration of Miami’s past, present and future, it invites guests to slow down, dress up and drink in the art of travel. Whether you’re lounging poolside, lost in the rhythm of live jazz, or falling asleep to the sound of the surf, one thing’s certain: this is not your average beach hotel it’s an experience etched in time.
