Choose Your Flora

Pick a Good Spot
Survey your yard and choose a spot that gets good sun and some shade. Most veggie plants and flowers need between 6 and 8 hours of quality sunshine to grow properly, but some things like a healthy mix of sun and shade. Check the tags on the plants you’ve chosen to find out what they like.

Preparation
Now you’re ready to start preparing the soil. If you have some foresight, you can start doing this months before your first plant goes in. First, get rid of the sod in the area(s) that you plan to plant, then spread a few inches of compost and topsoil.
That stuff will take a few months to decompose, but in the springtime, you’ll be gifted with a beautiful bed of soil, ready to plant.
Planting
Till the soil, then you’ll be ready to start planting. Most plants require warm weather, so you’ll need to hold off planting until you’re positive that the year’s frost has passed. Many of those will also grow well in the ground, straight from seed.
If you want to get a head start, you can seed in your home and keep them well-watered and near by a window that gets a lot of sunlight. When the grounds are ready, place them in the garden to enjoy the rest of the season.
Watering A simple garden
You’ve finished all
of the hard work. Now, you’ve just got to water the garden regularly and you’ll have it flourishing all summer long.
Seedlings need a lot of water to get going, so water them daily. Transplants need regular watering until the roots are established, which will be roughly every other day.
Beyond that, you just need to make sure the soil doesn’t dry out, which depends on humidity and rainfall. Check a few inches into the soil and if it’s dry, then you know it’s time to water.
