Teddy and Baloo were born at a roadside zoo and spent their earliest days in barren concrete enclosures without grass, enrichment or sunlight. Long before they were old enough to explore, they were passed around for human interaction and used for photo ops. Through it all, they had one constant: each other.When the duo finally arrived at Lions Tigers & Bears in 2014, everything changed. They were introduced to a natural habitat designed to let them roam, climb and rest the way bears were meant to. Today, the brothers explore side by side, nap in the shade together, and in a detail visitors absolutely adore share lunch every afternoon at their own outdoor picnic table.It turns out the way to a bear’s heart really is through food.
Moka & Nola: A Friendship That Helped Them Heal in Sanctuary
Moka, a young Bengal tiger, was confiscated at the U.S.–Mexico border after being illegally trafficked. Nola, a rare white tiger, was rescued from neglect in Louisiana. When she arrived at the sanctuary at just five months old, she was malnourished and suffering from parasites, while Moka had already endured the stress of being taken from everything familiar.The staff didn’t know what to expect when the two arrived, but what happened was surprisingly gentle. Instead of fear or competition, they formed a bond. Nearly a decade later, Moka and Nola wrestle, swim and play like lifelong siblings. Their energy is infectious and has made them two of the sanctuary’s most beloved residents.If Teddy and Baloo are a story about loyalty, Moka and Nola are a story about recovery and the kind of friendship that makes healing feel possible.
A Sanctuary Built for Safety, Not Display
Unlike zoos or attractions, Lions Tigers & Bears is designed with one goal: to give rescued animals a life as close to nature as possible. Habitats are spacious, enriched and landscaped with shade, climbing structures, pools and quiet hiding spaces.Volunteers help maintain the grounds, caretakers prepare specialized diets and veterinary care is provided on-site.
