My First Time at Little Beach Maui – My first time on Maui, I was traveling with my boyfriend and one of my best friends. On our first day, we explored a beach in Kihei near our condo. It was beautiful — soft sand, turquoise water, postcard perfection. But I wanted something with a little more pizzazz.
There are over 100 beaches on Maui. Many have won awards. Many are “must-sees.” But I wasn’t looking for predictable. I was looking for unforgettable. And somehow, that search led us straight into a naked beach in Hawaii.
What to Expect When Going Naked in Hawaii
Locals suggested we visit Big Beach at Makena State Park — officially known as Makena Beach. It’s the largest undeveloped beach on Maui and offers sweeping views of Kahoolawe and Molokini. It’s stunning, dramatic, and very popular.
But then someone said, “If you want something more interesting, go to Little Beach.”
Little Beach is widely known as Maui’s most famous naked beach. While Hawaii state law technically prohibits public nudity, Little Beach has operated as a clothing-optional beach for decades. Enforcement has historically been inconsistent, and the culture there is generally relaxed. Visitors can review the current public indecency statute under Hawaii Revised Statutes §712-1217 before visiting to understand the most up-to-date legal language.
So… Did We Actually Go Naked?
I’ll admit, I was hesitant. Stripping down in front of my boyfriend and my best friend wasn’t exactly on my Maui itinerary. But my boyfriend? Instantly on board. Of course.
I nervously floated the idea to my girlfriend. Before I even finished the sentence, she said, “Let’s go check it out.”
Well then.
Arriving at Little Beach
We walked north along Big Beach, climbed the lava rocks, and descended onto Little Beach.
To my surprise, it was busier than Big Beach. Sunbathers. Snorkelers. Drummers. Couples. Families. It wasn’t wild or inappropriate — just surprisingly normal. The vibe was relaxed and nonjudgmental.
My boyfriend stripped down in record time. My girlfriend stayed in her swimsuit. I compromised and went topless. And honestly? It felt… fine. Comfortable, even.
There’s something unexpectedly freeing about being on a naked beach in Hawaii. The body-consciousness dissolves quickly. Everyone is just there to enjoy the ocean.
Snorkeling at a Naked in Hawaii Beach
The snorkeling was incredible. Comparable to some of the scuba diving we had done elsewhere on Maui. We saw trumpet fish, rainbow parrotfish, brilliant yellow reef fish, and schools shimmering through volcanic rock formations.
At one point, I swam up to my boyfriend underwater, feeling playful — only to realize he had suddenly put his swim trunks back on.
When I surfaced and asked why, he said he was concerned about “curious fish investigating dangling jewels.”
We laughed so hard we swallowed half the Pacific.
What Little Beach Maui Is Really Like
Little Beach isn’t about shock value. It’s about atmosphere. It’s scenic, social, and surprisingly serene. Sunday evenings are known for sunset gatherings and drum circles. During the day, it feels like a relaxed extension of Makena — just with fewer tan lines.
If you’re searching for “naked in Hawaii” experiences, this is the one most people mean.
